Psychodynamic Therapy in Alexandria VA

Welcome to my website!
If you are seeking professional psychodynamic therapy for you or a loved one in Alexandria VA and the Northern Virginia region, please read on. If you are interested in other services, please visit my home page.
My name is Brian A. Sharpless, Ph.D., and I am a licensed clinical psychologist trained at the University of Pennsylvania and Penn State University with over 20 years of experience conducting psychodynamic therapy. In addition, I am a published author of books and articles on psychodynamic therapy (and other subjects) and a frequent lecturer in the US and Europe. I also provide clinical supervision for other therapists interested in learning this approach and have trained doctoral students at several universities. Along with my academic training, I was also a clinical fellow at the Psychoanalytic Center of Philadelphia and a teaching fellow of the American Psychoanalytic Association's (APsaA) Teachers Academy.
Psychodynamic Therapy is an Effective and Flexible Treatment Approach
Mental health issues can have significant impact on relationships, professional careers, and overall quality of life. The good news is that psychodynamic therapy has been shown to be effective for a number of conditions (e.g., anxiety disorders, depression, personality disorders). The overall goals of treatment can include: 1) gaining healthier relationships with friends, family members, and colleagues, 2) reducing behaviors or symptoms that cause problems for you, 3) gaining a better understanding of yourself and your patterns, and 4) increasing your overall satisfaction in your life.
I provide patients with up-to-date and scientifically grounded care, working with several of the main contemporary psychodynamic approaches such as Transference-Focused Psychotherapy (TFP), Mentalization-Based Treatment (MBT), and Supportive-Expressive Therapy (SET). All of these approaches have been successfully applied to different patient groups with the results published in high impact, peer-reviewed journals.
Professional Therapy is Not an Open-ended Commitment
I consider the ultimate goal of any therapy to no longer need therapy. How long it takes to reach that goal is unique to each patient's needs, level of severity, and personal motivation. Some psychodynamic approaches are short-term whereas others are medium to long-term in duration.
