Personality Disorder Treatment in Alexandria VA
Thank you for visiting my website.
If you are seeking experienced and professional treatment and therapy for personality disorder for you or a loved one in Alexandria VA and the Northern Virginia region, please read on.
My name is Brian A. Sharpless, Ph.D., and I am a licensed clinical psychologist trained at the University of Pennsylvania and Penn State University with over 20 years of experience treating personality disorders. In addition, I am a published author on the primary treatment approach for most personality disorders (i.e., psychodynamic psychotherapy) and a frequent lecturer in the US and Europe.
Your Successful Outcome is My Goal
Personality disorders can have significant impact on relationships and professional careers. The good news is that - with proper treatment - personality disorders can be helped through psychotherapy. The goals of treatment are threefold: 1) to gain healthier relationships with friends, family members, and colleagues, 2) to reduce behaviors (and feelings) that cause problems for you, and 3) to increase your enjoyment and satisfaction in life.
I provide patients with up-to-date and scientifically grounded care with the goal of personal recovery. I work with several of the main psychodynamic approaches to treating personality disorders (i.e., Transference-Focused Psychotherapy, Mentalization-Based Treatment, and Supportive-Expressive Psychotherapy). All of these approaches have been successfully applied to patients with personality disorders with the results published in high impact, peer-reviewed journals.
Professional Therapy is Not an Open-ended Commitment
I consider the ultimate goal of any therapy to be self-reliance (i.e., no longer needing therapy). How long it takes to reach that goal is unique to each patient's needs, level of severity, and personal motivation.
