Narcissistic Personality Disorder Treatment in Northern Virginia
Welcome to my website!
If you are seeking professional assessment or treatment of narcissistic personality disorder for you or a loved one in the Northern Virginia area, please read on. If you are looking for different services, please visit my home page.
My name is Brian A. Sharpless, Ph.D., and I am a licensed clinical psychologist trained at the University of Pennsylvania and Penn State University with over 20 years of experience treating personality disorders and other conditions. In addition, I am a published author of articles and books on the primary treatment approach for narcissism (i.e., psychodynamic psychotherapy) and a frequent lecturer in the US and abroad.
Can Narcissistic Personality Disorder be Treated?
Narcissistic personality disorder can have significant impacts on both relationships and professional careers. You may wonder if it is a treatable condition. The good news is that - with proper treatment - narcissistic personality disorder can be helped through psychotherapy. The goals of treatment are threefold: 1) to gain healthier relationships with friends, family members, and colleagues, 2) to reduce behaviors (and feelings) that cause problems for you, and 3) to view yourself in more realistic ways, and 4) to increase your enjoyment and satisfaction in life.
I provide patients with up-to-date and scientifically grounded care with the goal of personal recovery. I work with three of the four main psychodynamic approaches to treating narcissism and other personality disorders (i.e., Transference-Focused Psychotherapy, Mentalization-Based Treatment, and Supportive Psychodynamic Psychotherapy). All of these approaches have been successfully applied to patients with personality disorders with the results published in high impact, peer-reviewed journals.
Professional Therapy is Not an Open-ended Commitment
I consider the ultimate goal of any therapy to be no longer needing therapy. How long it takes to reach that goal is unique to each patient's needs, level of severity, and personal motivation.
