Narcissistic Personality Disorder Treatment in Fairfax County VA
Thank you for visiting my website.
If you are seeking experienced and professional treatment and therapy for narcissistic personality disorder for you or a loved one in the Fairfax County area, please read on.
My name is Brian A. Sharpless, Ph.D., and I am a licensed clinical psychologist trained at the University of Pennsylvania and Penn State University with over 20 years of experience treating personality disorders. In addition, I am a published author on the primary treatment approach to narcissism (i.e., psychodynamic psychotherapy) and a frequent lecturer in the US and Europe.
Your Successful Outcome is My Goal
Narcissistic personality disorder can have significant impacts on both relationships and a professional career. The positive news is that, with proper treatment, narcissistic personality disorder can be helped with psychotherapy. The goals are threefold: 1) to gain healthier relationships with friends, family members, and colleagues, 2) to reduce behaviors and feelings that cause problems for you, and 3) to increase your enjoyment and satisfaction in life.
My focus is on providing my patients with up-to-date and scientifically grounded care with the goal of personal recovery. I work with three of the four main psychodynamic approaches to treating narcissism and other personality disorders (i.e., transference-focused psychotherapy, mentalization-based treatment, and supportive psychotherapy). All of these approaches have been successfully applied to patients with personality disorders with the results published in high impact, peer-reviewed journals.
Professional Therapy is Not an Open-ended Commitment
I consider the ultimate goal of any therapy to be self-reliance (i.e., not needing therapy). How long it takes to reach that goal is unique to each patient's needs, level of severity, and personal motivation.
