My name is Brian A. Sharpless, Ph.D., and I am a licensed clinical psychologist trained at the University of Pennsylvania and Penn State University with over 20 years of experience treating personality disorders and other conditions. Is Borderline Personality Disorder Treatable?

Unfortunately, some people mistakenly believe that it it is untreatable. The good news is that - with proper treatment - borderline personality disorder can be helped through psychotherapy. I work with three of the four main approaches to treating borderline personality disorder (i.e., Transference-Focused Psychotherapy, Mentalization-Based Treatment, and Supportive Psychodynamic Psychotherapy). All of these approaches have been successfully applied to patients with borderline personality disorders with the results published in high impact, peer-reviewed journals.
Professional Therapy is Not an Open-ended Commitment
I consider the ultimate goal of any therapy to no longer need therapy. How long it takes to reach that goal is unique to each patient's needs, level of severity, and personal motivation.
