Anxiety Treatment in Suburban Maryland
Thank you for visiting my website.
If you are seeking experienced and professional treatment and therapy for anxiety for you or a loved one in the Suburban Maryland area, please read on.
My name is Brian A. Sharpless, Ph.D., and I am a licensed clinical psychologist trained at the University of Pennsylvania and Penn State University with over 20 years of experience treating anxiety and other disorders. In addition, I am a published author and frequent lecturer on anxiety, psychotherapy, and other topics in the US and Europe.
Your Successful Outcome is My Goal
Anxiety can have significant impacts on your health, well-being, work productivity, and overall quality of life. The good news is that - with proper treatment - anxiety can be helped through a combination of psychotherapy and lifestyle modification. I provide two effective treatment approaches: Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Psychodynamic Therapy. Although they take different approaches to treating anxiety, the main shared goals are to reduce symptoms, break bad patterns that may be increasing and maintaining your anxiety, and improve your overall functioning. Both have been effectively used in numerous of clinical trials and the results have been published in top-tiered, peer-reviewed journals.
I provide patients with up-to-date and scientifically grounded care with the goal of personal recovery. I work with a number of anxiety disorders (e.g., panic disorder, social phobia/social anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, specific phobias) and have been trained by some of the leaders in the field at the University of Pennsylvania and Pennsylvania State University.
Professional Therapy is Not an Open-ended Commitment
I consider the ultimate goal of any therapy to be self-reliance (i.e., no longer needing therapy). How long it takes to reach that goal is unique to each patient's needs, level of severity, and personal motivation. In general, though, CBT and psychodynamic therapy are brief (and effective) treatments for anxiety.
