Welcome to my website!

My name is Brian A. Sharpless, Ph.D., and I am a licensed clinical psychologist trained at the University of Pennsylvania and Penn State University with over 20 years of experience conducting therapy for anxiety disorders. In addition, I am a published author on professional topics such as anxiety, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and psychodynamic therapy and am a frequent lecturer in the US and Europe. I also provide clinical supervision for other therapists interested in learning to treat anxiety and other issues.
Chronic Anxiety can be Treated
Anxiety can have significant impacts on your health, well-being, work productivity, and overall quality of life. The good news is that - with proper treatment - anxiety can be helped through a combination of psychotherapy and lifestyle modification. I provide two broad and effective treatment approaches: Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Psychodynamic Therapy (PDT). Although they take different approaches to treating anxiety, the main shared goals are to reduce symptoms, break bad patterns that may be increasing and maintaining your anxiety, and improve your overall functioning. Both have been effectively used in numerous of clinical trials and the results have been published in top-tiered, peer-reviewed journals.
I work with a number of anxiety disorders (e.g., panic disorder, social phobia/social anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, specific phobias) and have been trained by some of the leaders in the field.
Professional Therapy is Not an Open-ended Commitment
I consider the ultimate goal of any therapy to be to no longer need therapy. How long it takes to reach that goal is unique to each patient's needs, level of severity, and personal motivation. In general, though, CBT and psychodynamic therapy are brief and effective treatments for anxiety.
