Telehealth Therapy Across Multiple States

I provide secure telehealth therapy to residents of numerous states through PSYPACT (the Psychology Interjurisdictional Compact), along with limited in-person availability in Frederick, MD. Whether you are seeking treatment for a personality disorder, sleep disorder, anxiety, or another concern, distance is no longer a barrier to receiving evidence-based, specialized care. All you need now is a good internet connection.

Dr. Brian A. Sharpless, licensed clinical psychologist providing teletherapy

About Dr. Sharpless

I am a licensed clinical psychologist and author with over 20 years of experience assessing and treating personality disorders. I received my Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Pennsylvania State University and completed post-doctoral clinical and research fellowships at the University of Pennsylvania. I also completed a clinical fellowship at the Psychoanalytic Center of Philadelphia.

Along with my clinical practice, I publish books and articles on psychodynamic therapy (e.g., Psychodynamic Therapy Techniques, Oxford University Press, 2019) and psychopathology (i.e., the study of mental disorders) and provide ongoing supervision and consultation to other therapists treating complex cases.

What is PSYPACT

PSYPACT is an interstate compact that allows licensed psychologists to legally provide telehealth services to clients located in other participating states, without needing to hold a separate license in each one. I am currently licensed in Maryland and Virginia, and through my participation in PSYPACT I am also able to provide telehealth therapy to residents of numerous other participating states.

Who this Service Helps

Telehealth therapy is available to residents of Maryland and Virginia under my direct license, as well as to residents of other PSYPACT-participating states. It is a good fit for individuals who:

  • Live in a state without ready access to specialists in personality disorders, sleep disorders, or other complex or rare psychological conditions
  • Prefer the convenience and privacy of therapy from home or work
  • Have relocated to another state but who wish to continue working with me
  • Are seeking a second opinion, diagnostic clarity, or a consultation not readily available locally
  • Want access to specialized treatments that may not be widely offered in their area (e.g., see my Services page)

What to Expect

Telehealth sessions are conducted via video software. Following a thorough initial assessment, therapy may commence with me or another provider, depending on your needs and location. Many clients find that specialized, evidence-based treatment is just as effective, and often more convenient, over telehealth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is telehealth therapy as effective as in-person therapy? A substantial and growing body of research shows that telehealth therapy produces outcomes comparable to in-person treatment for many conditions, including depression, anxiety, and PTSD. Research on personality disorders and telehealth specifically is more limited, though clinical experience and the general evidence base for telehealth are highly encouraging. I’m happy to discuss what to expect based on your specific concerns during an initial consultation.

Do you offer in-person sessions? Yes, on a limited basis in Frederick, MD. If in-person treatment is important to you and you are outside the local area, please contact me to discuss options.

Which states can you see clients in? I am directly licensed in Maryland and Virginia, and through PSYPACT, I am also authorized to provide telehealth services in a growing number of additional participating states. Check the PSYPACT status of your home state here

What technology do I need for telehealth sessions? A private space, a stable internet connection, and a computer, tablet, or smartphone with a camera and microphone. Some people find that a good headset is helpful.

Do you accept insurance for telehealth sessions? I do not accept insurance, but many patients can receive partial reimbursement through providing a special receipt called a “superbill” to their insurance and listing me as an “out-of-network provider”. Please check the particulars of your plan, as they vary widely.
