Clinical Supervision and Case Consultation
Whether you’re seeking ongoing meetings to develop your clinical skill set or a more focused consultation to work through an impasse with a specific client, I offer clinical supervision services for psychologists and other mental health professionals at all stages of training and practice.
About Dr. Sharpless
I am a licensed clinical psychologist with over 20 years of clinical and supervisory experience. I received my Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Pennsylvania State University and completed clinical and research fellowships at the University of Pennsylvania. Following graduation, I’ve supervised clinicians across the full range of experience levels (e.g., from first-year graduate students to postdoctoral fellows and licensed professionals) in academic and private practice settings (e.g., the University of Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania State University, Washington State University, and The American School of Professional Psychology).
In terms of orientation, I am primarily psychodynamic (e.g., influenced by Supportive-Expressive Treatment [SET], Transference-Focused Psychotherapy [TFP], Mentalization-Based Treatment [MBT], and others). However, I also practice some CBT approaches (e.g., Prolonged Exposure Therapy [PE], Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Insomnia [CBT-I], CBT for Generalized Anxiety Disorder).
Along with my clinical work, I am a researcher and author of clinically-relevant books (e.g., Psychodynamic Therapy Techniques: A Guide to Expressive and Supportive Interventions, 2019, Oxford University Press), a Cognitive-Behavioral Manual for Isolated Sleep Paralysis (CBT-ISP) and numerous other articles and book chapters. I have also supervised diagnosticians on several NIMH-funded clinical grants which required high levels of interrater reliability. Through PSYPACT, I am able to provide supervision and consultation to eligible clinicians across many states via telehealth.
Areas of Focus
Ongoing Therapy Supervision & Training
- Regular, structured supervision covering your general caseload or focused training in a specific modality or clinical problem area (e.g., personality disorders, insomnia, parasomnias, unusual disorders).
Short-Term Case Consultation
- Focused consultation for specific cases in my areas of expertise, including personality disorders, sleep disorders, and unusual or rare psychological presentations. These consultations range from a single session to several, depending on the complexity of the case, and are well suited to clinicians who have hit a clinical impasse or want a second opinion on diagnosis or case formulation.
What to Expect
Supervision and consultation are tailored to your specific needs and level of experience. For ongoing supervision, we’ll typically establish a regular meeting schedule and identify goals around modality, case type, and general clinical development. For short-term consultation, we’ll focus specifically on the case or clinical question at hand.
Sessions are available via secure telehealth across many states (check the status of your home state here), with limited in-person availability in Frederick, MD.
